What is the difference between an osteopath and a manual osteopath?

The Difference is  In Canada, one may encounter DO( Doctor of Osteopathy) or DOMP( Osteopathic Manual therapist or practitioner). Both American osteopathic physicians and European osteopaths call themselves DOs. American practitioners are Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, and European practitioners have a Diploma of Osteopathy. Doctors of Osteopathy is a restricted title to those belonging to the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • A doctor of osteopath diagnoses, prescribes medications and offers dietary recommendations, where as a Manual Osteopathic Therapist can assess and treat, they do not diagnose.
  • The doctor has many more years of training
  • The term ‘Osteopath’ is reserved for doctors only; other graduates can use the terms Osteopathy or Osteopathic.

What is the difference between Chiropractor and a manual osteopath?

The main difference is that the osteopath use more rhythmical and gentle technique, where as Chiropractor use high velocity, manipulative techniques.  Chiropractor may use other modalities such as ultrasound, and various electrotherapies for pain relief while osteopaths rely on hands on manual techniques.  Essentially, both offer valuable and useful services, and each can be included in holistic healthcare regime.

What is Manual Osteopathy?

Manual Osteopathy  is a drug-free, non-invasive,  gentle, hands-on treatment. 

The Four founding principles

  1. The body works as a single entity.
  2. Structure impacts and is interrelated with function.
  3. The body has self-governing means, The body has the capability to protect, repair, and regenerate itself to preserve its function.
  4. Rational treatment is based upon the integration of the first three principles into the total care of the patient. 

Manual osteopaths provide one of the most effective treatments available for chronic pain resulting from musculoskeletal disorders.

How to enroll and how long is the treatment?

We use the Jane app for online booking. Please read & sign the consent form. 

  On the day of the appointment, a Manual Osteopathic Therapist/ Practitioner will review the chief complaint, and medical history, and do a visual and physical assessment of the whole body. Treatment that is relevant to the concern and assessment, followed by reassessment to verify changes.

 The initial assessment takes about 90 -120 minutes & follow-up is around 45 -60 minutes.

 

Do I require referral from a Physician?

A referral is not needed to see a manual osteopath.

Cancellation Policy?

 Please provide 24 hours notice for any cancellation. If a cancellation is made less than 24 hours prior to an appointment you will be charged 100% of the service total. No shows are 100% of the service total.

What Should I wear for treatment?

 Please be comfortably dressed, but keep in mind manual osteopath needs to visually assess the anatomical structures & body. Wearing a t-Shirt, shirt. Tank top and shorts or leggings, lose enough to allow movement during assessment and treatment  is appreciated.

If you wear Turban, please wear patka for assessment.

 Please avoid Jean, pants, belts if you could.

As per  2017 International Journal of whole person care 97.8% of osteopathic patient are satisfied with their treatment.

Is Manual Osteopathy care Safe?

Manual osteopathy is drug free, safe , gentle, non invasive,   low force, and pain free therapy for management of chronic pain. No health treatment is free of potential side effects, whereas, after Manual Osteopathy  session patient feels immediate relief, but some experience soreness, mild- mod fatigue which fades  within 24-48 hours. 

Any Instructions regarding assessment and treatment?

Hydrate yourself with plenty of water before  and after the care.  Please avoid large meal, smoking , alcohol at least ONE  hour before and after the care.

How a Manual osteopath therapist/ practitioner help me with my primary concern?

 

Manual Osteopathy Practitioner/ Therapist (MOP/MOT) will ask  history in detail  about chief complaint , review of system, past medical history, family history, social history and conduct  assessment in detail. He/ she will treat the conditions observed during assessment using different manual osteopathy modalities and re assess.  IF YOU MAY FILL IN THE INTAKE FORMS PRIOR COMING IN FOR INITIAL CONSULTATION, MOT will be able to spend more time on Manual Osteopathic Assessment & Treatment.
